Stripe is establishing dominance in AI agent shopping by enabling purchases through single-use virtual cards, a method that limits visibility for Mastercard and Visa. The card networks have developed competing payment technology designed to give them more control by routing agent purchases through existing customer cards, but their approach remains early stage. This shift reflects a broader power struggle over how AI agents will conduct commerce and who controls the payment infrastructure.

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to up to 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India as an alternative to layoffs. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman framed the move as giving staff members financial support and career planning resources. The buyouts span multiple divisions including AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows and Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources.

OpenAI announced on October 19th that its latest AI models show substantial improvements in migrating legacy code written in older programming languages like COBOL into modern systems. The capability could help organizations including the IRS, banks, airlines, and government infrastructure maintain and modernize aging software that currently underpins critical operations worldwide. The announcement addresses a longstanding challenge in enterprise IT where outdated code remains in production because replacing it carries extreme operational risk.

1Password has launched a feature that enables AI agents to log into user accounts on their behalf while keeping passwords hidden from the agents themselves. The capability allows automated systems to access and manage accounts without exposing sensitive credentials. This addresses a core security challenge in AI agent deployment, where delegation of tasks typically requires sharing login information.
